This post was initially started in January; after listening to Pat Holliday talk about a deceptive spirit that is manifesting in various fellowships. Some recent revelations, involving situations of unfathomable complexity, have returned this topic to the forefront. Jesus told us that the devil would seek to deceive, if it were possible, even the very elect. Such an endeavor would require taking on a christianesque facade and appearing to be very spiritual. in this late hour, where many have surrendered to a lifeless form of godliness, one who seems to be “spiritually inclined” will have added appeal to those who are earnestly searching for more than they now have. This post must be written with caution as I do not want to mis-identify anything. I would rather be overly careful than careless. As such, this is going to be primarily a visiting of scriptures.

We can be assured that the Lord will protect us in these perilous times if were walking close to him. Straying in these hours is unfathomably dangerous as this pseudo movement (third wave is a common name for it) is rampant today; seeking to obscure the authentic and lead folks into practices that are not not from on high. This “should not” discourage anyone from seeking that which is real. The gifts of the Spirit are, and will continue to be, in play until Jesus returns. Receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost is imperative if we’re to stand in the days ahead. We must, however, have our senses exercised to discern between the real and the feigned.  If we are truly born again and diligently seeking, the Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth. If we begin to drift, he will always make it known to us. Folks can lead us astray, merchandisers can abuse us, and our imagination can sometimes get the mastery over us. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my (Jesus) name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

 John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

The best way to get into the heart of this is to visit something that transpired during the days of the apostle Paul. During his ministry, he warned often, even weeping, that enemies of the cross would enter into the church, and that Satan would transform into an angel of light. As such, the event event recorded in the sixteenth chapter of Acts wasn’t an isolated event.

Acts 16:16 “And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.”

That single passage offers a boatload of insight. First, the devils power is very real. In this situation, others prospered from the information that they received from this ladies familiar companion. Secondly, she intercepted Paul at a pivotal moment; as he and Silas were going up to pray. The devil will stop at nothing to hinder our prayer life; even placing in our path things which appear needful to address. One of his most effective lies is “you can always pray later; but this, you have to act on now….tomorrow will be too late.” He’s a smooth talking salesman who knows exactly which buttons to push in order to distract us from the mission at hand.

Acts 16: 17 “The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew us the way of salvation.”

Well that was a true statement. Paul and Silas did carry the words of eternal life through Jesus and this lady seemed to recognize this. An undiscerning onlooker may well have concluded, “she is one of them also.” But something else was in play; something that the damsel may not have even been aware of. She may have truly thought that she was doing a good thing, however, her spiritual hitchhiker had another agenda. One  that, over time, would foster dire consequences and would  hinder the furtherance of the gospel.

Acts 16:18 “And this she did many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. and he came out that same hour.”

This passage reveals two boatloads of insight. The fact that she followed them for several days without confrontation, suggests that in the early going, nothing seemed amiss. Her words were in agreement; even evangelical. “Hey; come listen to these guys! They serve the most high God and can point the way to salvation” And someting just occurred to me as I was writing that last sentence. She was drawing people to where Paul was…WHY? It’s speculative, however, perhaps it was so the spirit which was in her, could begin causing confusion amongst those who were hearing the gospel for the first time. Even if the girl sincerely desired truth, there was a campaign in motion to cause the uninformed seekers to take another spirit. furthermore, as she called out to those in the crowd, she, in effect, became a secondary focus of attention; even though her words seemed to be encouraging others to listen to Paul and Silas.

The situaion was troubling Paul. Initially, he may have not known why he was grieved. I call it “a crunch” an uneasy sensation that transpires whenever something is amiss. The Holy Spirit will warn us when something is not what it appeatrs to be; even if the feigned presentation is flawless. Several times in the past, I’ve thought something to be authentic beyond any shadow of a doubt, and yet this uneasy feeling persisted. We don’t walk by feelings, however, if something is bothering us, deeper investigation into the matter is warranted. Paul was grieved, and after several days, he saw what was going on. Whether it was through direct revelation or he began to notice anomalies amongst the crowds, (probably both) he became aware of what was transpiring and he addressed it accordingly. We’ll know for certain in the future, however, I believe that, following this deliverance, the girl believed on Jesus; despite what her previous motives may, or may not have been.

One thing is for certain. Her former masters didn’t believe, and when the money train came to a halt, they were furious. This, in turn, resulted in an uproar in Philippi, Paul and silas being cast into prison, a mighty earthquake at midnight, and the household of the Philippian jailer being saved. I run the risk of being sidetracked here, but today, nothing has changed insofar as campaigns that employ the paranormal. Our government continues to fund an aggressive remote viewing program while police departments sometimes call in psychics  (someone who is receiving information from demons) to solve cases that seemingly have no solid leads. At the conclusion of a matter, the onlookers will proclaim “a good work has been done.” In reality, however, a great deception has gained momentum, while the gospel of Jesus Christ (the only name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved) has been made to appear less relevant in the eyes of the deceived ones.

This is getting far longer than was intended, so let me jump to some other scriptures; the first being paramount:

Luke 11:13 “If ye then, being evil, know how to good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”

We should never allow the abundance of counterfeit activity to prevent us from seeking the authentic. “What is the chaff to the wheat?” If we ask in faith, we shall receive, and we must be filled with the Holy Ghost if we’re to stand in the evil day. My story is not the norm, however, I received the baptism of the Holy Ghost  about three minutes into a time of prayer.  Even though I didn’t fully expect it to happen on that afternoon, the Lord knew exactly what I needed.

I Thessalonians 5:12 “And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

This is a must; to know who we are following as examples and whose teachings we are taking to heart. While the Lord does give pastors, prophets, teachers, and the like, we must ensure that we hold the word of God in higher esteem than these.  Here’s why:

 I timothy 4:1 “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils;

Seducing spirits, offering up something which sounds scriptural but is not. For example, we know that there was a man; mentioned in II Corinthians 12:1-3, who was taken to the third heaven. This incident was Gods doing and the testimony offers encouagement to the saints in the physical realm that an awesome eternity awaits us. Today, however, people are trying to get there by  methods employed in the third wave movement . To seek such a thing on our own, or at the beckoning of teachers who employ methods which are not sanctioned in scripture, is dangerous beyond measure and sets one up for potentially irreversable calamity. Also take note of unusual buzz-words. These can often be an indicator that something is amiss.

I Thessalonians 5:21 “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”

We must thoroughly and prayerfully look into a matter before embracing it. It must fall within the perimeters of scripture; “precept upon precept, line upon line.” And if something seems good, but we have great uneasiness about it, we should find out why.

This has now exceeded 1600 words and, with the move to daylight savings time, it’s now past 5:00am. I have to go. This post seems woefully incomplete; probably due to the complexity of an issue that seems to become more astonishing by the day.  In conclusion, we must get close to Jesus and be atuned at all times to the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit. A couple of months ago, Pat Holliday expressed amazement at how widespread the great falling away appears to be as folks leave their first love and embrace falsehoods. As events play out and the world wonders after a beast, those fallen away ones may well be our greatest adversaries. But only for a season. “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding weight of glory.”

Blessings always in Jesus name.

  1. “Wow”!!! Once I started I had to finish though it was long it was well worth the read. This is meat and we need this in this hour. As I view the happenings going on all over the world God is just showing off!!! But to those who don’t believe it makes no sense, and they cannot get it in their carnal minds. These lines “In conclusion, we must get close to Jesus and be atuned at all times to the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit”. This is a must for us that trust and believe in Jesus Christ,we must cling to him as never before. Timbob if you have time check out my post here my other blogging sight, just trying to reach as many people as possible before Jesus returns.
    Love you brother

  2. Hi pat. Thanks so much for stopping by. You touch on something that is incredible as we watch it play out. For those with eyes to see, the signs are everywhere. The earthquake off the coast of Japan is the latest entry of a trend that has been on the rise for some time. But to the unbelieving, it’s just another earthquake. The illusion of continuance causes most to not recognize the tell-tale signs that this age is reaching its conclusion.

    But if, and when, our earthly situation reaches its end, we have an inheritance incorruptable and eternal, with Jesus. My heart is there and not here. To be with Jesus and stand with the great cloud of witnesses from every tribe and generation will be so “beyond amazing” that the offerings of this world are as nothing.

    I’ll stop by your blogger site when I can. I have visited your wordpress site a few times. It’s hard to find time these days to navigate the blogosphere as I once did, but I try. The fellowship with likeminded saints is a primary reason. As Malachi 3:16 reaads “Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.”

    Blessings always in Jesus name.

  3. flee the wrath Says:

    HI Timbob,
    Increasingly I think that we are realising that the deception of our day is one of the most significant markers of the end of the age. I believe that when Jesus said nation will rise against nation, in Mat 24 he alludes to the natural. But then He follows it up with “and kingdom against kingdom” and in this He alludes to the the fight that will come to the faithful. (satan has come down with great wrath, knowing that his time is short)
    But this I know. It is the Lord alone who is able to lead us through this valley and keep us in the time of trouble. And this to those who love Him and keep His commandments.
    Nice Post! Take care….

  4. Great post Timbob … glad you are sounding this warning as another spirit other than God’s yet a copycat of God’s is pouring forth increasing the deception and leading many astray. More than ever we need to be Lovers of truth.

  5. Hi Tim. I apolagize for takinbg so long to reply. You touch on an important truth; the kingdom against kingdom. This is beyond national borders. It;s worldview against worldview and agenda against agenda. While nations will certainly be at odds with each other, the factions go well beyind this.

    Thanks so much for stopping by. Blessings always in Jesus name.

  6. Hi Rachel. It’s an astonishing thing as the real is mimiced by the false in an effort to spread confusion, distract the undiscerning, and sideline those who would otherwise seek the fullness of God. One thing that has been impressed heavily is that we know a person by their fruit. They can knmow every verse and make all kinds of lofty claims, but if they harbor bitterness and become unhinged by the littlest of complications, something is wrong.

    Thanks so much for your observations. We all have to walk carefully and, as Hebrews 5:14 points out, have our senses exercised (through use) to discern both good and evil.

    Blessings always in Jesus name
